Is it okay for a Muslim, specifically a scholar doing nothing for the deen, to live on donations even though he is healthy? What is halal income?

Answer
So long as an able-bodied person, scholar or otherwise, does not beg others, it is permissible for anyone to willingly donate to them, and permissible for the recipient to accept a willing donor's donation, even if they live on such donations. What is impermissible is for an able-bodied person capable of finding another means of living to beg others for sustenance. Halal income is income that is not materially impermissible, nor generated from an impermissible source.
