Breaking a fast to travel for a death in the family

If a person started fasting in the morning as usual, but at 9am received news that someone close to them had died and had to travel a long distance by road and boat, and the journey is difficult, should they continue their fast while traveling or can they break it?

If a person began the day fasting then traveled, it is permissible for him to break the fast, although completing it is preferable if there is no hardship. *لو أصبح صائمًا وهو مقيم ثم سافر، فله الفطر في ظاهر الرواية، لكن الأفضل أن يتم صومه إن لم يشق عليه* — "If he began the morning fasting while a resident and then traveled, he may break the fast according to the relied-upon narration, but it is better for him to complete his fast if it does not cause hardship." — Ibn ʿAbideen
