Arrogance is a condition of the heart of feeling superior to others -- unexpressed it is 'ujb, expressed it is takabbur; related to religious matters it is kibr (a major sin); related to worldly matters it is fakhr if unexpressed, tafakhkhur if expressed. The Prophet defined arrogance as 'the rejection of truth and contempt for others.' Confidence rooted in study and experience while acknowledging these as Allah's favors is not pride. Arrogance against enemies of Islam or oppressors is sometimes recommended. There is no specific worldly punishment for arrogance -- it is self-punishing.
