Historical evidence for the Event of the Elephant (Surah al-Fil)

Is there any record outside Islamic texts pointing to the People of the Elephant mentioned in Surah al-Fil, given a claim that elephants couldn't have made the desert journey to Makkah?

Answer
There is the 'Bariqi-Robin-Na'it Inscription' ('The Elephants Inscription'), the subject of a recent archeological paper. Even setting aside the Quran as revealed Scripture, it is a 7th-century historical document mentioning the event, itself historical documentation; disputing it needs equivalent historicity, not speculation -- the same logic would dismiss the Pyramids or Stonehenge. The elders of Quraysh knew of the event and some witnessed it directly; 'A'ishah reported seeing a blinded, crippled survivor of that army begging in Makkah; none of the documented disputes between the Prophet and the disbelievers of Quraysh ever disputed the event itself.
