Giving salam to a Muslim colleague who avoids greetings

Question

Our Muslim colleague at work doesn't like to talk and says salam isn't compulsory, telling us not to talk to him. Is it still compulsory for us to give him salam?

Answer

If this brother avoids giving or replying to salam because he is shy of being known as a Muslim in public, it is better to give him salam so that he is obligated to reply. If he is simply introverted and prefers to keep to himself: if he is bothered when others talk to him, leaving him alone and giving him space is better; if he is not bothered, then -- if he replies whenever given salam, it is better to give it, so both receive the reward; if he does not reply, it is better not to give it, so he is not burdened with the obligation of a response he will not fulfil. *And Allah knows best.*
