Answer

The hadith is narrated from Anas ibn Malik, who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The remedy for sciatica is the tail fat of a Bedouin (desert) sheep. It should be melted, divided into three portions, and consumed on three consecutive mornings while fasting." This narration is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah and Musnad Ahmad, and has been graded authentic or acceptable by a number of scholars, although there is some difference of opinion regarding its chain of transmission. Scholars explain that this narration falls under Prophetic medicine (al-Tibb al-Nabawi) — it does not necessarily mean this remedy will cure every case of sciatica, as illnesses differ in cause and severity, but it is a treatment prescribed by the Prophet ﷺ that may be beneficial under appropriate circumstances, by Allah's permission. Ibn al-Qayyim, in al-Tibb al-Nabawi, explains this refers to a particular type of desert sheep known to be effective for certain forms of sciatica, and that treatments may vary by individual condition and environment. There is no contradiction in also seeking medical advice from qualified healthcare professionals, particularly since what is commonly diagnosed as sciatica today may arise from a variety of underlying conditions. *And Allah knows best.*
