How should the hadith about Jews or Christians being a Muslim's "ransom from the Fire" be understood

The meaning of this hadith and similar ones is this: on the Day of Judgement, some people will be deserving of the Fire, including some sinful Muslims -- but some of them will be forgiven, and it will be said "this Jew or this Christian will take your place" or "is your ransom." This is a metaphor, as if to say there is no need to enter the Fire, since this other person is deserving of entering instead; it also demonstrates Allah's forgiveness for the people of tawhid even if they have sinned, and His punishment of the people of shirk (Jews and Christians in the hadith being examples), even if they have done some good, since iman is the ultimate pinnacle of good and kufr/shirk the ultimate pinnacle of evil. It does not mean non-Muslims will be punished for sins committed by Muslims -- "No bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another" (6:164) -- nor that non-Muslims will be undeservedly or randomly punished -- "This is for what your own hands have sent before you... Allah is not ever unjust to the servants" (3:182). The verse on Allah repairing the believers' deeds represents one way among others in which believers receive mercy on the Day of Judgement; even taken literally, the hadith presents no contradiction, simply another way believers may be forgiven. *And Allah knows best.*
