Keeping zakat money entrusted for distribution

Can a person who is needy keep for his own use the zakat money which was given to him for distribution?

Answer

*Wa alikum asalaam.* No, a person who is given zakat money specifically for distribution cannot keep it for personal use, even if they are needy. The money was entrusted to them as an amaanah (trust) and must be distributed to the intended recipients.

However, if the giver of the zakat intended that the distributor could also take a portion if needed, then it would be permissible. Otherwise, the money must be distributed according to the giver's instructions.
