In the Hanbali madhab, the issue of one or two adhans for Jumuʿah is understood in light of both the original Sunnah and the practice of the rightly guided caliphs. During the time of the Prophet ﷺ, as well as the eras of Abu Bakr and Umar, there was only one adhan for Jumuʿah, called when the imam sat on the minbar to begin the khutbah — regarded as the foundational practice (الأصل) in the madhab.

Later, during the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan, a second adhan was introduced before the khutbah due to the expansion of Madinah and the increased number of people, in order to alert them in advance. Ibn Qudamah in al-Mughni affirms this was done out of need, not as a change to the core Sunnah. Al-Bahuti states in Kashshaf al-Qinaʿ that there is no harm in giving an additional adhan before the khutbah when there is a need, following the action of Uthman. Al-Hajjawi, in Zad al-Mustaqniʿ, identifies the adhan of Jumuʿah as the one given when the imam sits on the minbar.

Based on this, the Hanbali madhab holds that performing only one adhan at the time of the khutbah is completely valid and in direct accordance with the Sunnah, while adding a second, earlier adhan is also permissible when there is a need or benefit for the community. Both practices are accepted within the madhab, and neither is considered a bidʿah.
