Order of missed Ramadan fasts and the six days of Shawwal

Question

Which fast should a person keep first: their missed fasts from Ramadan, or the six Shawwal fasts? And is it recommended for young teenagers to keep the six Shawwal fasts?

Answer

*Wa alikumus salaam.* The fast of Shawwal is recommended for a person from the age of puberty. If you keep the Shawwal fasts first, they would be counted and accepted; however, it is better to keep the fard (missed Ramadan) fast first, as it remains compulsory, and should death come, you will be held responsible for not keeping it.
