Qurbani FAQ — unsuitable animals

Answer

**Q: What type of animals should be chosen for Qurbani?** A: Healthy animals, free from faults or defects.

**Q: What animals are not suitable?** A: (1) blind, one-eyed, or having lost more than a third of its eyesight; (2) lost more than a third of an ear, or born without ears (small ears are fine); (3) horns broken off from the root (an animal born without horns, or with horns broken off but not from the root, is suitable); (4) lame to the extent of walking on three legs only (a limp on the fourth leg to reach the slaughter place is allowed).

**Note:** if an animal is injured during slaughter itself (e.g. a leg breaks), the Qurbani remains valid. If an animal became unfit for Qurbani after being bought in a healthy state, a non-wealthy owner may still offer it; a wealthy owner (zakat-payer) must obtain another animal.
