In the hadith where 'Ali is asked who was best after the Prophet and seems hesitant to name 'Uthman before himself, why was he afraid to mention 'Uthman?

Answer
It was agreed Abu Bakr was best after the prophets, then 'Umar, but there wasn't always agreement on the order between 'Uthman and 'Ali -- some, especially 'Ali's own family, favored 'Ali. When asked, 'Ali wanted confirmation of his own view but feared his son would affirm the other position with a degree of authority; this was a natural human sentiment, not animosity toward 'Uthman.
