Answer
In voluntary prayers such as sunnah and nafl, a person has the choice in how they recite. One may choose to recite quietly or audibly, both are permissible depending on the situation. However, the jurists explain that reciting quietly is generally better, especially during the day; at night there is more allowance to recite with slight audibility, and this may even be recommended, so long as it does not disturb others.
