Shafi'i ruling on non-Muslims entering the masjid

What is the Shafi'i position on non-Muslims entering the masjid, and is it from the earlier or later Shafi'i authorities?

Answer
It is permissible for non-Muslims to enter with permission from a mature Muslim, if there is a benefit to the Muslim community, no contact with najasah, and no disrespect shown -- recommended if it may soften their hearts toward Islam, makruh if the sole purpose is socializing with no anticipation of eventual acceptance of Islam. They should not participate in the salah itself. This does not extend to political campaigning, promoting incompatible lifestyles, or platforming individuals whose public conduct is incompatible with Islam.
