Answer
*Wa alikumus salaam.* If the taweez contains only Qur'an or known duas, it is permissible, provided the person believes benefit and protection comes from Allah alone. If it contains unknown symbols, numbers, or unknown words, it is haram and may lead to shirk. If one believes the taweez itself protects, and not Allah, it is major shirk.
A layperson should avoid using such items without the instruction of someone versed in this field, since many have unknown or doubtful content. The Sunnah supplications, like Ayat al-Kursi, Falaq, and Nas, are clear, authentic, and sufficient for protection.
