*Things that MUST be avoided:* eating, drinking, or sexual intercourse; a non-sexual act that usually results in ejaculation; deliberately inducing vomiting; medicinal treatment through the nose or ears (per earlier scholars); using an enema or inserting medicine into the private parts. *Things that SHOULD be avoided:* foul speech, backbiting, or lying; excessive water when rinsing the mouth or nose; eye-drops (unless seriously needed); ear-drops (per some later scholars); chewing tasteless gum; tasting food unnecessarily; brushing teeth with flavoured toothpaste (though miswak is permissible); deliberately gathering and swallowing saliva; deliberate sexual stimulation; deliberate exposure to thick smoke.
