Is it a major sin to remain single as long as you don't partake in sinful, lustful acts? Or is it compulsory to marry if you are physically and financially capable?

Answer
Not marrying is not a sin, even when one is physically and financially capable. It is only sinful when one is capable, feels a strong desire for sensual gratification, and fears falling into haram relations if not married -- in that case marriage becomes obligatory. If one is capable, does not fear harm from marrying, yet would not otherwise dedicate free time to worship and righteous deeds if single, marriage is recommended. *And Allah knows best.*
